Glossary

Trading card terminology can be confusing, and some of the terms on this site carry specific meanings. This glossary covers the key concepts behind how debut cards are identified and tracked. For the full research process, see the Methodology page.

Core Concepts

Debut Card / Rookie Card / 1st Appearance Card

A card from the first trading card set to feature a specific character or actor. The key word is set — every card of that character or actor within the debut set counts as a debut card, not just a single card. These three terms mean the same thing and are used interchangeably on this site.

Primary Debut Card

When a debut set contains multiple cards of the same character or actor, one is selected as the primary debut — the card featured on the site. For photo cards, the primary debut is chosen for the best visual presentation: a solo shot, portrait orientation, the character or actor's name on the card, and base set inclusion. For art cards, the traditional lowest-numbered card is used. See Methodology for the full selection criteria.

Debut Set

The first trading card set, by verified release date, to include a specific character or actor. This is where the debut card comes from. Release dates are verified against multiple sources to ensure accuracy.

Honorable Mention

A designation for edge cases where a second card deserves attention alongside the primary debut — typically a promo card released just before the base set, a rare variant, or an alternate card that tells a different part of the story. The pack-pulled base set card remains the official debut; the honorable mention is called out separately on the set and character pages.

First Serialized Card

The first numbered or limited print run card for a character or actor — for example, a card stamped /999 or /50. A character's debut card and first serialized card often come from different sets. This site tracks both as separate collecting milestones.

Card Types

Base Card

A card from the main numbered checklist that comes in every pack. Base cards are the most common cards in a set and the default choice when selecting a primary debut card.

Insert / Chase Card

A bonus card from a themed subset inserted into packs at a lower rate than base cards. Insert cards (also called chase cards) have their own distinct designs and numbering, and are typically harder to pull than base cards.

Parallel Card

A rarer version of a base or insert card with a different border color, foil finish, or serial numbering. Parallels share the same image and card number as the original — the only difference is the treatment and scarcity.

Serialized Card

Any card with a printed serial number indicating a limited print run (e.g., 042/999). The lower the number after the slash, the rarer the card. Serialized cards can be parallels, inserts, or standalone special cards.

Promo Card

A promotional card distributed outside of packs — at conventions, in magazines, or as a retailer incentive. Promo cards sometimes ship before the main set and may be flagged as honorable mentions when they represent a character or actor's earliest card appearance.

Photo vs. Art

Photo / Media Card

A trading card featuring photography from a film, television series, or promotional shoot. Photo cards tie a character to a specific actor, which is why this site tracks debuts per actor — not just per character. The MCU Proper and Other Marvel categories are built entirely on photo cards.

Art Card

A trading card featuring original illustrated artwork based on comic book source material. No actor is involved, so art card debuts are tracked once per character regardless of how many actors have played the role on screen.

Site Categories

MCU Proper

Photo-based trading cards from the Marvel Cinematic Universe — all films and series produced by Marvel Studios from Iron Man (2008) through present. This includes Disney+ series and associated properties such as Netflix Marvel, Agents of SHIELD, Runaways, and Cloak & Dagger. A character can have one debut per actor in this category.

Other Marvel Film & TV

Photo-based trading cards from non-MCU Marvel properties: Fox X-Men films, Raimi Spider-Man trilogy, Amazing Spider-Man films, Sony Venom series, and older productions like Blade, Daredevil (2003), and Fantastic Four. Tracked separately from MCU Proper, so the same character can have different debuts in each category.

TCDB

The Trading Card Database (tcdb.com) — a community-maintained checklist and pricing resource for trading cards. Set and card links throughout this site point to TCDB for full checklists, card images, and collector tools.

Cross-Reference

A link between related entries on this site. When the same character appears in multiple categories (e.g., Spider-Man in both MCU Proper and Other Marvel) or has been played by more than one actor, cross-references connect those entries so collectors can see the full picture.
